Generally speaking, grabbing a taxicab typically isn’t the highlight of anyone’s day—unless maybe you really hate your job and the cab is your ride home. Sliding into the back seat of a Ford Crown Vic is a necessity, a means for getting from point A to point B. But what if you slid into a newer, altogether more interesting yellow-painted Ford? Enter the electric Ford Mustang Mach-E, a new yellow cab entering service in New York City that might elevate the hired-car experience—with the added bonuses of zero tailpipe emissions and some fun tech.

Gravity Inc., a sustainable mobility startup emphasizing electric vehicle fleets and infrastructure, is the company behind the Rally Yellow Mustang Mach-E EV taxicab. The company hopes to launch a fleet of 50 or so uniquely outfitted electric cabs; in addition to the Mach-E, the EV taxi fleet will soon include the Tesla Model Y. This is reportedly the first time the Mach-E has been included in a NYC taxi fleet.

Gravity added a few custom touches to its Mach-E taxis, the foremost being a 22-inch tablet from which riders can adjust climate controls, play music, watch videos, and snap and send filtered selfies. There’s also a panoramic roof for enhanced sightseeing. How’s that for a captivating night out in the city…

As for the driver, well, there’ll be no selfies, just constant monitoring via driver-facing AI technology aimed at preventing driver distraction and ensuring safe driving behaviors. A bit creepy, yes, but maybe reassuring? At least for the passengers?

After a day’s work, the Mustang Mach-E taxi will juice up (preferably overnight during off-peak hours) at Gravity’s charging hubs at Manhattan Plaza on West 42nd Street. Gravity claims its charging equipment exceeds Tesla’s superchargers.

An EV pilot program, adopted by NYC’s Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC), authorizes Gravity to use the Mustang Mach-E for service as a taxi. The Gravity Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicle and its drivers adhere to all TLC regulations regarding safety, pricing, and medallion insurance. All this to say, the Mach-E is a legit NYC yellow taxi that can be flagged down or summoned through yellow taxi e-hail apps. And it’s way cooler than your typical NYC cab.
